Application of HPMC in Gypsum Products

Aug. 28, 2021

With the rapid development of the construction industry, people's demand for new building materials is increasing. Due to the enhancement of people's awareness of environmental protection and the continuous improvement of construction efficiency requirements, cementitious materials and gypsum products have developed rapidly. The most common gypsum products such as gypsum plaster, adhesive plaster, embedded gypsum and tile adhesives are all HPMC products. So do you know the application of HPMC in gypsum products? Or do you know the role of HPMC in gypsum products?

What is HPMC?

HPMC

Hydroxypropyl Methyl Cellulose (HPMC) is a non-ionic cellulose ether obtained by a series of chemical processing using natural polymer materials (purified cotton) as a raw material. HPMC is an odorless, non-toxic, odorless white powder that dissolves in cold water to form a clear, viscous solution, with good water retention, thickening, emulsification, film formation, suspension, adsorption, gelation, surface activity and protective colloids. The products are widely used in waterborne coatings, interior and exterior wall putty powder, thermal insulation mortar series and other product systems.

It is soluble in water and other organic substances such as ethanol, propanol and dichloroethane. However, it is insoluble in acetone, diethyl ether and anhydrous alcohol.

When in aqueous solution, HPMC has high stability, transparency and surface activity. Due to its thermal gel properties, heating can make the HPM precipitate into a gel.

Next, we will take gypsum plaster as an example to analyze the application of HPMC in gypsum products.

What is Gypsum Plaster?

Gypsum plaster is a high-quality plastering material for interior walls and ceilings. After use, the surface of the wiped wall is smooth and delicate, does not contain powder, is firmly bonded to the substrate, and has no cracking or falling off. And it has the function of fire prevention.

The Role of HPMC in Gypsum Plaster

High Water Retention Capacity

Cellulose has high water holding capacity. This feature helps to improve resistance, prevent cracking and enhance the overall appearance of gypsum plaster. When applied to putty and gypsum plaster in other construction projects, it can also improve surface uniformity, lubricity and adhesion.

Highly Stable

HPMC's excellent film-forming properties and high resistance to degrading enzymes help stabilize the pH value of gypsum plaster and enhance its salt discharge performance. HPMC has an effect on the setting time, pumpability and workability of the gypsum plaster composition. In general, it improves construction efficiency and prevents weathering after building surfaces are exposed to water-soluble salts.

Thickening

HPMC can improve the tensile strength of gypsum plaster and other building materials is your suitable material. Because it acts as an interface agent, it improves the bending strength of gypsum plaster and increases the bonding strength.

All of these make HPMC an indispensable part of the gypsum plaster that every construction worker must have.
